Stop Paying for SuperMedia, Yellow Pages or Other Directory Listings

SuperMedia and Yellow Pages are examples of directory listings.  Directory listings are links in general or niche directories. A directory listing generally has a link to a site called a title, which is followed by a text description.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO PAY TO BE FOUND IN THE MOST OFTEN USED DIRECTORY LISTINGS.

SuperMedia and the yellow pages employ some of the scariest sales people I have ever met. Do not be misled or intimidated into purchasing something you don’t need, don’t want and will do very little to help the online ranking of your business that a free listing won’t do.

A listing in their directory will help to optimize your website.  A paid listing in their directory will do little more than allow that listing to possibly rise above another listing in that directory only.  If anything, your listing in their directory has the potential to create competition for your website. In essence their directory will be competing for ranking position with your website for similar searches.

Why Get Directory Listings?

Directory listings are a popular way to build one-way links for a site. By getting a site listed in numerous directories the number of inbound links will increase. These links will not only help keyword rankings but may also drive some traffic to a site. Niche directory listings in particular may actually bring customers to a site.

Should your company be listed in these directory’s?  Yes.  Just don’t pay an arm and a leg (most should cost very little if anything at all), don’t lock yourself into a long term commitment and don’t be afraid to think it over before you agree to anything.  This isn’t a print publication…deadlines are a thing of the past.

Do Not Overpay for Online Directory Listings

Supemedia and yellowbook and superpages, oh my!

Corny, but not really a bad analogy.

Too often the representatives of these companies prey on the fears they know you have.  If you don’t advertise with them, no one will ever find your website and in six months you’ll be out of business.

Really?

According to Google 20% of all searches every day are unique. Google’s makes money by making sure consumers find what they are looking for.  If Google can’t find it, nothing can find it.  Which is why consumers use Google.

66% of all online searches begin with Google.

*      Google is the new “yellow pages”.

*      Google is free

*      Google can be found on every device you own.

Directories do serve a purpose.

  • The occasional consumer will use one to find you.
  • They’re a good source of links and citations.

So before you head down the “yellowbook” road, understand what you’re trying to accomplish. Many listings can be had for nothing or next to nothing.  Start with the free listing and track the results.  If you’re determined to try the paid listing, tracking the “free” listing first will allow for a comparison.  Odds are a paid listing will not generate significantly better results.   It didn’t take Dorothy too long to figure out that the Wizard was an imposter…it won’t take you long either.
